Are Shih-tzus allowed to have dairy products?

I am making a special dog cake for my puppy for her birthday. And it says to use this one dairy product for the frosting, but I have heard shih-tzus aren't allowed to have dairy products, but I don't really know. So, I would like to know if anyone does know.

THANKS!!!

dogs arent supposed to have any kind of milk (its said to give them the runs, but ive given my dogs some in small amounts and it never hurt them) however a great alternative is you can try using cool whip as an icing, it isnt as harsh on their stomachs just dont give her a big piece since shes a smaller dog.
hope you have a good party!!

aww thats cute. =] I have a shih tzu and our vet told us that tey are not allowed to have dairy products:

Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets.

Absolutely not!! They will throw you in jail for sure!! LOL, just kidding, but I wouldn't recommend most dairy products. What is the specific one that the recipe calls for? And kudos to you for not just going through with the recipe. Most people wouldn't even care that much.

ADD: By the way, it doesn't matter your dog's breed. Just the fact that it's a dog.

Actually No. It gives them terrible stomachaches and diarhhea. So I would'nt give it any dairy products but be careful about what is in that cake makesure its puppy safe! Have fun at your party

Adult dogs generally are lactose intolerant. However, most dogs really like dairy products such as plain vanilla ice cream, plain yogurt, cheese, etc.

As long as you give them sparingly, they can make a good occasional treat. Small bits of string cheese work great for training if you have a dairy-loving dog.

Some dairy products can also be beneficial to dogs, such as plain yogurt which can be added to their food and helps with digestion.

The key is to know what works for your dog (some dogs easily get diarrhea from dairy products) and use them sparingly, you should be okay.

Actually, this is under question. Rachel Ray gives cheese and other dairy products to dogs, and her dog is perfectly well. As long as the recipe doesn't call for too much of an amount of this dairy product your dog should be fine.

I think the opinions on this subject are the same as opinions about giving children dairy. Some kids tolerate it and some don’t . More do than don’t. I have a Shih-tzu and he has dairy all the time. Cheese bits, a dish of milk at bed time and ice cream when ever we all do. AT the ice cream stand he has his own dish with a doggy treat. Never has there EVER been a problem. He is very healthy, has no diarreah and is happy all the time. It may all depend on what they are used to. Right from birth we have always given our dogs what ever we eat and they have always lived long healthy lives.

Shih Tzu’s can have dairy. However, not much of it. Plain yogurt actually does help with digestion as well as tear stain. 1 Tbsp.
