What is the average weight for a shih tzu puppy?

i have a 3 months old male shih tzu puppy. He is about 5 lbs. Is that consider normal weight for 3 month old male shih tzu? is he overweight or underweight? if he is what can i do?

Full grown dogs range from 10-15 pounds. In a small dog like that, 5 pounds is a big difference. One 5 pound shih tzu may be too big. Another shih tzu with a different build may be underweight at 5 pounds. I know my shih tzu weighed about that. But, he’s a very small dog now. While, my neighbor’s shih tzu weighed 5 pounds at 4 weeks old. But, he’s very big now. My shih tzu, Sam is only 10 pounds and 2 years old. The vet said he’s almost a little overweight though. So, it’s up to your vet whether he’s the right weight or not. Good luck with your pup. I know Sam is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Shih-Tzu are usually around 10lbs. As with any breed, some can be bigger or smaller.

His weight at the moment is not what’s important, what you should look for is if he has a gut. Excess weight causes strain on the back and legs. However, since he’s a puppy, he’s most likely not overweight.

You can’t gauge it on how much other Shih-Tzu weigh because they all weigh differently. Take him to the vet to find out if he’s overweight or not. When he’s older, you can take him again to find out his ideal weight.

Consult the breeder and your veterinarian, not random strangers.
