buying puppies online?

i was reading through some previous questions where people questioned online puppy sales. i have been breeding shih tzu puppies for 5 years and most of them have been sold online and 2 have been shipped from dubbo NSW to Sydney to perth. i keep in contact with the buyers and show both parents and all of the pups. i suppose what im trying to say is that there are so many genuine people out there trying to earn a little extra cash and its the people that have puppy farms that spoil it for every one else
whats the difference from buying online to buying out of a paper i dont see a difference

So, what is your question? This just seems like a rant to me. And, as a personal preference *I* would never buy a puppy on line because I’d want to see, in person, the place where the puppy was bred and raised AND at least see the bitch.

To the person who asked about the difference between on line and a newspaper, generally newspaper ads are relatively local.

(Of course, these days I’d only adopt through a rescue, but if I WERE to buy a puppy, never on line.)

Newspapers are no better. Buying online means you don’t see the puppies, the mother. No proof health testing or temperaments. You don’t know WTF your really getting. No contact with the breeder and no idea about what kind of repuatation they have. Its just stupid. Would you adopt a kid online?

You say puppymills are bad but you show your dogs so I just have to ask do you health test as well?

“…people out there trying to earn a little extra cash…” sounds like they are breeding for money, not to improve the breed. I caution people not to buy from newspaper ads, either, as they are either BYB or puppy mill outlets.
While I think it’s good that you can show both parents to potential buyers, I’d prefer it if you entered your parent dogs in shows and had achieved their championship titles before breeding them.
Breeding dogs, when done right, just m i g h t make it possible for a breeder to break even, not make a profit.

I don’t have anything against people who advertise their puppies online, that’s where i found my puppy. But i think people who don’t go and see the puppy WITH the mother, are irresponsible. It’s not just the fact that they might be from a puppy farm, they don’t know what the puppy’s temperament is like.

Of course there are any number of reputable breeders who use the internet to sell their puppies. Unfortunately buying from the internet also brings in the bad as well as the good, and it has been said that reputable (good?) breeders don’t have to advertise - they have a book of people waiting on their next breeding. I am in the UK, and have often checked the internet for puppies, both in my own breed, and in another as I’m about to buy a puppy from another breed! From my knowledge of my own breed/breeders, there are loads on the main internet puppy sale sites, who are dodgy, at best. And hardly any of the well-known breeders in my breed. The situation may well be different in other parts of the world.

In general, I’d always warn people to be very careful when buying from an internet advertisement. See the place the puppies are being reared, the mother etc.etc. But that’s perhaps no different from answering any advertisement, from any source, really.

Sounds like you are doing okay however although I do have reservations about your ‘ trying to earn a little extra cash’ comment!!! This isn’t normally the main reason for breeding a litter (in my book).

If you’re breeding to “earn a little extra cash”.. then you are not breeding responsibly. Breeding COSTS money. If you are doing things right, then you are not making money.. most breeders are lucky to break even after a well-planned litter.

Reputable breeders do not advertise online. Many of them DO have websites, but they use it to showcase their CH dogs, show off their new potientials, brag about titles and points, and also to display health test results. They do keep in contact with other breeders and potential puppy buyers thru email.. but they dont activly advertise their available pups.

Reputable breeders just dont “need” to advertise.. they get enough potential buyers from word of mouth. Most breeders turn people away too when they dont have any planned litters.. they just rarely breed and dont always have pups available.
