why do shih tzu dogs smell so bad!?

My dog is a shih tzu.He smells really bad, even when i wash him twice a week!

Make an effort to find out specifically where the bad odor is coming from on the dog. Check the ears. Smelly ears are infected and need veterinary care. Check the face, below the eyes. This area, if allowed to stay moist too much will develop stinky skin infections which, long term will leave permanent scars and bald spots. Check the mouth. Bad teeth and gums can give off a bad smell. See your vet. Look at the lower lip on each side, right behind where the big fang tooth rests when the mouth is closed.Yellow patches are pus, indicating skin infections.

If it is none of those, the dog may have an anal sac problem which a vet can take care of. Another possibility is skin disease, which can be in patches or generalized all over, and can give off an unpleasant odor.

Your dog needs to see a vet. It is not normal for Shih tzu dogs to smell bad.

Washing them that often actually makes it worse.

Twice a week is too many baths. That could play a large part in the reason.

It’s not normal for a dog to smell THAT bad. Especially if they are being groomed. I’ve known plenty of Shih Tzus and none of them smelled that bad. Can you describe the smell? It could be a number of things. It might be an underlying health reason, so you might want to consider consulting your vet. It could, also, be diet. I find a lot of dogs that are fed foods packed with corn and grains (like Dog Chow or Alpo) are VERY smelly dogs. I cannot be around them for long periods of time. Or, it could be allergies. (I find the allergy smell smells kind of like… fritos).

Thats your opinion not a fact. There are claims, opinion, fact, guesses, myth, commands, question.
Question - a request for an answer
Opinion - statement that is not testable & is completely subjective.
Claim - statement declaring to be true, some what testable, but is unsubstaintiated
Command - order to perform a task | | guess - an unproved claim, that is admittably falsifiable

Maybe that’s the problem, your giving him too many baths or it may be the food you’re giving him, try just brushing him every day or if you keep his hair really short just wiping him down w/ a warm cloth so he can keep the oils his skin needs to stay healthy.

Washing him that much can cause skins problems which can cause fungus to grow on the skin, causing a very nasty odor. Someone else mentioned teeth which can cause very bad breath, and also a problem with the anals glands can give a dog a very nasty odor. Have your dog checked out by a vet to find the cause of the smell, both you and your dog will be happier for it.

Shih tzus don’t smell bad as a breed, your shih tzu has an issue, could be from over-bathing,try once a month and use a dog shampoo.Perhaps try another dog food, or could it be his breath?I also have a shih tzu,but she’s never smelt bad.

    Over bathing is not good
Could be ear infection, bad breath, or some type of issue with the skin.

Should have it looked at by the vet.

Your dog should not have a bad smell., whatever breed it is,

If it does, and it has not rolled in something unpleasant, then there is something wrong with it or the way you are feeding it - and you should consult your vet. There must be something.wrong..

Shouldn’t smell like that. Could be fungal infection of the skin. Get it checked by the vet.

Check his ears and his teeth. Check his rear end.

Does he roll in the grass. If he does it could be that, they roll in urine they can smell and worse things sometimes. Not just Shih Tzu other dogs as well.

You can buy a spray Aloe Vera for dogs.

Own a Shih Tzu who does not smell only when doing the above - rolling.

ive got a shit tzu as well and washing dogs that many times a week is not good, it shouldn’t even be that many times a month, as the dogs oils get washed away that protect the coat which may be why he smells a bit :) also check his ears as dogs with long ears and hair can easily get ear infections which stink as not enough air gets to them

if he is old than it may be his teeth which are basically rotting down and smelling, one more possibility is dogs with long hair often need there hair trimming around his ears, eyes, bum and gentleman’s area just be careful not to cut him

    hope this helped !
