is my dog a shih tzu or a chinese imperial?

my dog is almost 8 years old and i got her from a shih tzu breeder when she was around 5. every other shih tzu i have seen has been about twice her size. i was told there was no such thing as a mini shih tzu, but i’m not sure. i have read that chinese imperials have been mistaken as mini shih tzus and are just now getting recognized. i am just curious of to whether she is THE smallest shih tzu i’ve ever seen or if she is actually something else….

There is no such thing as a Chinese OR Imperial Shih Tzu. If you didn’t get registration papers from your breeder, it may not even be a purebred dog. If you did get registration papers with your dog, keep in mind that purebred does not always mean well bred.

Yes, she probably is a imperial. You’re right. There’s no mini shih tzus. Go to your vet if you really want to know.

If she comes from a shih tzu breeder she’s a shih tzu. Much like people, some dogs are just tiny- accidents of genetics, nutrition or other circumstances. It’s like how some labs are tiny and others are massive- it happens in hugely popular dog breeds. Dogs are pretty malleable genetically.

She could be a mix either.
