How do I take care of a shih tzu dog?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

I got a dog two days ago and I don’t know how to take care of it. Please help.

Shih Tzu require more care than other breeds, especially when the hair is kept long. They need daily brushing and regular haircuts to avoid tangles.
They shed very little dander, making them a great pet choice for people with allergies.

Keep an eye on Shih Tzu while they are drinking. Because their noses are so centrally located, water can easily block their breathing.

Common health issues include hip dysplasia, ear and kidney infections, and eye problems. Check their ears and eyes regularly for cleanliness. (You can even find special eye drops for them).

They are great apartment dwellers, but not happy in hot climates. And while they don’t require as much exercise as a Lab, a daily walk is necessary.

How to play with an old shih tzu?

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

So I adopted a 7yr old shih tzu, she’s such a sweet girl likes to be in the room with the family but sleeps pretty much all day unless she’s outside. I wonder maybe she could be a little bored. And is there a way I can entertain her. Do older dogs like toys?

7 is not old for a toy dog. They usually live till around 15-17 yrs. My older dogs still liked to play with their toys. It depends on what the other owners did. If they didn’t play with her then she may not know what to do with toys.

How often does my shih tzu puppy need a haircut?

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

She is an outside dog, she’s perfectly fine,I have got many comments saying she’s not,she hates inside! She wont sleep inside,or even so much as step a paw in the door!

when you look at your dog and go "shes getting kind of shaggy" its time. OR if things are getting stuck in her fur like twigs or mud then again probably time. You could always try getting her trimmed about the same time as you get her nails cut.

What is the most popular Shih Tzu haircuts?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

My little sister is not sure how to cut or not cut her first pets hair.

P.S. the Pups name is Oreo.

The puppy cut is the most manageable hairstyle for a shih-tzu. The long ones are also nice, but you must brush them religiously or they get horrible tangles and mats. If you do get a puppy cut, make sure to put a little sweater on him or her in cold weather.

What are the types of haircuts given to Shih Tzu?

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

All I know of is the puppy cut. Is there such thing called a pet cut?

A puppy cut and a pet cut are essentially the same. Both are just shorter cuts that follow the dog’s outline with a cute face. Of course ask the groomer as the terminology is not an industry wide standard. Many of the same cuts have different names depending on how the groomer was trained.

How to get rid of fleas on my poor little shih tzu?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

I have tried the once a month stuff powders sprays and bathing her in flea soap no not all together. They seem to just love her my mini pin doesn’t have an issue is it the long hair or what. While giving her a haircut I killed at least 20 fleas and they were big. I live in a trailer park so cats are everywhere so once the fleas are gone they just come back. Help please she has sores from them.

Over the counter stuff doesn’t work and it’s poison to some dogs. Do you have a vet? Get some Frontline. It’s up-front expensive but in the long run nowhere near what that over the counter stuff that doesn’t work costs. Pet Armor, which is sold at Walmart, has the same ingredients. Not sure if you need a prescription.

Does anyone know of any good and reliable dog training websites ?

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

My family and I are seriously thinking about getting a dog, pregerably a shih tzu or a lhasa apso (sorry about the spelling) but before getting one we need a lot of info about to train it, what they eat etc does anyone a really good website on where i can get this information

Realize that the two breeds you mentioned have grooming issues. You will have to spend the money about every 5-6 week getting them groomed/haircut.That aside, everyone has to be on the same page as far as training.Example: if Mom doesn’t want dog on furniture but kids let the dog. This confuses a dog, Take the puppy to puppy class. This generally is at about 4 months of age.He will have had enough puppy shots by then.Remember trainers are training you to train the dog.You will need to feed the pup 3 times per day a good brand of food, take him out to go potty alot to the same spot out the same door.Use a key word like"go potty" he will get the idea.Crate him when you can’t watch him.I found an excellent web site that offers everything you would need it’s www.jbpet.com
They have excellent customer service.Good luck getting the pup.If you haven’t decided boy or girl know boy dogs are more mushy/needy and girl dogs are great and don’t pee on every little thing.Good luck.

How often do I bathe my longhair dog?

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

He is a shih tzu cross Bichon frise, his fur is long and curly ^u^ But he gets really bad odours…My parents say he smells like crap, I don’t really smell it but I don’t wwant a bad smelling dog so how often do you think is best I give him a bath?

Maybe if you clean the dogs sanitary area after he potties, that would help.

I have a bichon, she gets a bath and trim every two weeks. Even tho I keep her in a puppy cut, she gets brushed often, daily.

No one likes a smelly dog. Maybe you should consider going to a professional groomer at least once a month? Maybe give the dog a haircut?

How to socialize my dog with other dogs?

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

I have a male maltese mixed, 1 1/2 years old at home and recently adopted a new dog, a 3 years old male shih tzu. The problem is, the shih tzu basically does not get along with all dogs, not just my current maltese mixed. He’ll growl whenever a dog comes near him and even attempt to attack and bite other dogs. Since he is a rescued dog, I do not have any information of his past. He marks very often though I’ve tried to correct him many times.

How do teach him to be calmed and submissive when he’s around with other dogs?

Is he neutered? If not, get him neutered and that should lessen the marking…but once that becomes a habit you can’t train him not to mark areas in the house…
As for socializing, you just have to work with him. My mix also hated other dogs, but I would just take her to dog parks or an area with dogs, keep her on leash and gauge her reaction. Even with the dogs far away she would often growl and I would tell her "no". After a few times doing this, she would not growl in the dog park, so I would treat her. We began moving closer and closer to the dogs, waiting until she wouldn’t growl and then getting closer. Over time I would allow her to go up to other dogs, always being careful to be aware of her reactions (i.e. hackles raised, tail in between legs, ears back, teeth bared, etc.) and over time she would get used to the other dogs and eventually she was perfectly fine. Now she LOVES to run around with other dogs, but I will tell you it took awhile to get where she is now.
Good luck!
And thanks for adopting!
