How often should I wash my dog?

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

I’ve been washing my Shih Tzu once a week. Though I’m not exactly sure how often I should be washing him. So, I came here for an answer. (: Shih Tzus do have longer coats of fur, so does that mean I have to wash him more than once a week or something?

You shouldn’t be washing him that often actually. It takes away all natural skin oils and gives the coat a dull look and it will cause him to get dry skin and skin problems in the future.

You should have the dog booked into a a dog grooming salon as Shih Tzu’s do not shed, meaning he needs to have a haircut every 10 - 15 weeks. He will get bathed, cut and cleaning professionally.

You can wash it maybe once in between that :)

Hope this helped.

Is it a good idea to rename an older dog?

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

We are adopting a blonde male shih tzu who has been called Pepe all his life. He is 8 years old. We’re not too fond of the name. Would it just confuse him if we renamed him? We can stick with the name Pepe if we have to.

~ I have renamed all the dogs I have taken in, young and old. They will always learn a new name. Stop calling the dog Pepe and start calling him the new name. Say it often when petting him, feeding him and taking him out. In 2 weeks, usually less, they will start to respond to it. Encourage them responding to it with praise and you will never know they were named something else.

I have successfully changed all of my adopted dogs name and I currently have 14 dogs.

How many cups of food should I give a Boston Terrier every day?

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

My husband is planning to adopt a Boston Terrier. We had a Maltese and a Shih Tzu. It will be our first time to have a Boston Terrier so we are not familiar how to feed them. We need to know how many cups of food we should be give him every day. Thanks!

The amount of food to be given to a Boston Terrier depends on its weight and the amount of calories found in the dog food you are giving it. For example, an 11-pound Boston Terrier puppy needs about 882 to 1764 kilo calories everyday. This is equivalent to 2 to 4.1 cups of Purina Dog Chow, or 2.3 to 4.6cups of Iam’s Chunks or Nutro Max Adult Food. So, you should know first how heavy is the Boston Terrier you plan to adopt and choose the right dog food before you can determine how much you are to approximately feed it everyday.

How to curb a dog’s aggressive behavior?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

I recently adopted a rescue dog (Shih Tzu) who at first was very timid. Now that we’ve been together for about 6 months and he has gained some confidence, he acts aggressively towards our home visitors and sometimes to admirers while we are walking down the street. Any suggestions to curb this behavior?

I have several ideas for you but wish you have said how old your dog is.

Look into Nothing in Life is Free, NILF, it works on the principle that the dog has to work for everything in life, nothing is free. This helps your dog focus on you, if helps confirm you are the boss as you contol all food/toys/fun etc.

Look into doing obedience, and I mean proper obedience not the local vet/pet shop classes. You want this dog to obey you instantly as you need to be able to control him, obedience also promotes you as the boss as your dog obeys you and the dog learns to focus on you and ignore what is happening around him.

Remain calm, when walking your dog, it can help to walk with friends and practice walking towards each other, if you dog shows any aggression give a quick jerk on the leash and a very firm NO. You can stop drop some yummy treats on the ground, but make him sit and wait until you allow him to eat the treat with a release word, I use eat. If you do this when talking to friends he will be more focused on the food and less on who you are with.

don’t forget to give him a lot of praise when he is being good, don’t encourage your visitors to approach him, he doesn’t have to be friendly, but he does have to ignore them.

Monday, January 21st, 2013

I have a Shih Tzu and I was wondering if there were any good websites that showed or told you how to give him a haircut (preferably a puppy cut, he looks way cuter that way!). I wanna try and save a bit of money through the school year next year. Any help would be great, thank you!

How Do I Take Care Of A 7 Year Old Shih Tzu?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

I adopted a 7 year old Shih Tzu (male) from a friend and I don’t know how to take care of it.
1:How do I take it for out a walk?
2: How do I feed it food? (I gave him its favorite food but he won’t eat it. What do I do?

Well to answer your first question, you can get him a collar and a leash, put it on him, and take him on a walk. Just don’t let go of the leash. Also while on your walk, bring a small bowl, and some water so he doesn’t get thirsty. And bring a plastic bag with you to pick up and dispose of any droppings.
Now to answer your second question, just place his food in a bowl, and see if he eats it. Is his tummy making noises? If it is, he might be having an upset stomach, and if that’s the case, then he should eat when he feels better. You mentioned that you got him from a friend, and no doubt he must have loved his previous owner very very much. Shih Tzus are very loyal dogs, so he might be a little depressed. I know when my Shih Tzu is depressed, she won’t eat anything, well, until she gets really hungry. Also, is his food crunchy or is it wet? It you are feeding him wet or canned dog food, then make sure it doesn’t sit out for longer than 30 minutes. Also, ask your friend if they had him on a specific feeding schedule, and if they would feed him in a certain way. I personally feed my dog dinner at 5:00 PM everyday, and and I always tell her what she’s eating, like "Sirloin Steak Flavor in meaty juices! Bon Apetite! Enjoy! Eat Up!" You can try doing something similar, you know, make him excited about his food. Be enthusiastic. Find out from your friend what they would do when they fed him. Another possibility is that he just might not be hungry at the moment, so perhaps you can try again later. If he doesn’t eat anything within 24 hours, take him to the vet and find out what’s going on. I’m sure he will eat once he gets hungry.
Enjoy your Shih Tzu! They really are wonderful dogs! :) If you need further information, you can ask your friend, or the vet. You can also get a book on Shih Tzus, either at a book store, or at a pet store. Anyway, I hope I helped! And I hope that he does eat his food and that you and your new companion will enjoy each others company!
