What could cause sudden aggressive behavior in my female Shih Tzu pup?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

My 5-month old, mostly calm Shih Tzu started barking at my yellow shower cap and when I went into the bathtub she lunged at me and growled and bit at my hand several times. Today, she did have the experience of visiting with her real mom and dad. I don’t know if something happened when they were playing that triggered this behavior.

I have a 3 year old, male Shih tzu. It sounds like what your pup has is the same thing mine gets on occasion - I call them the "Crazy Zoomies" - excuse the non technical term. He will start grabbing things with his mouth (espcially stuffed animals), start growling and runs around the house. If I try to go near him, he will growl and bark. At first I didn’t know what was happening, then I realized this is his strange way of letting me know that he wants to play….tug of war is his favorite. When these set in, I will play about 5 minutes of tug of war and catch in the living room with him while he bounds everywhere and runs up and down the stairs with a stuffed animal or rope toy. I do not let him play with children in this manner though and if we are around children when the "Crazy Zoomies" occur I get him away as he can be rather aggressive. Then, they will leave just as quickly as they came and he will plop down on the floor asleep.

I also believe that part of this comes from the fact that he was just spayed and it takes about 6 months for the hormones to leave the body. Is your dog fixed? This may be part of it. He was a rescue that I recently adopted so I don’t know if this is what he was like pre-surgery.

Hope this helps…..

how can I get my shih tzu to poop outside?

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

I adopted a 3 year old shih tzu, and he was going poop outside fine as long as he was on a schedule. Now, I will take him for his walk in the morning and evening and he waits until he comes inside and goes poop on my rug in the same place everytime when I’m not looking. What should I do to break him of this habit?

After the walk you need to stop for several mins in one spot so that he has time to go. Maybe he won’t go on walks because it’s constant moving. When he actually goes outside give lots of praise.

How can I encourage my dog to play more?

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

I adopted a Shih Tzu from a local rescue program. She hasn’t played much at all except when she was really excited after a bath. Yesterday she started playing with her toy for the first time and she did it today as well. How can I encourage her to play more? I think she is still shy and nervous because she was abused by her previous owners.

Get a NEW toy she’s never seen before.. rub some grease from bacon or hamburgers and let her sniff it. Hopefully she will like it… throw the toy like fetch, when or if she goes to get the toy slowly and calmly walk up to her with a little piece of whatever food you cooked to make the grease and say "lets play" and give her the treat. do this a couple times just to get the word "play" into her head so she knows this is positive. Then every time you want to play with her you tell her "lets Play!" and she will want to play more. because of her background, yes she is still nervous. before rough housing meant she was in trouble and was going to get hit.. now she’ll think oh hey this is so much fun "lets play!"

hope this helps.

How do I keep my dog from chewing on my furniture?

Friday, November 9th, 2012

I recently adopted a Shih Tzu, I don’t really know how old he is but I think he’s maybe about 1 year or maybe 2 years old. He still acts like a puppy and chews on my furniture. How do I keep him from chewing on my furniture?

Well if its a puppy then just give him some chew toys. But if your sure hes a year old then when he does give him a stern NO. And put him in some obedience classes. DO NOT spank or abuse, that never works. It just makes them scared of you.

Can shih tzus express their own anal glands?

Monday, November 5th, 2012

I am getting a shih tzu (puppy) soon and I wanted to know if they could express their own anal glands, I heard that big dog breeds can but I still needed some info on if shih tzus could or not. Thanks!:)

All dogs should be able to. Your dog might have problems, it might not. But it’s something to keep an eye on since it is a common issue for small breeds. Usually you can just ask the groomer to check, or have them show you how to do it yourself.
