Gracie: adopt me!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Gracie is an 11-pound, three-year-old Shih Tzu who came with Shamu, Kyra, Stan, Tinker, and Jessie from a breeder in Alabama who was getting rid of some of her “stock.”

Like her friends, Gracie has not had the proper socialization in her life thus far. She longs for a family to teach her that life is good and that pets are loved. Because of her size and lack of socialization,

Gracie is asking for a home without children. She is warming up to our staff and volunteers pretty quickly considering what she’s been through. Check back for updates about this sweet girl!

Tinker: adopt me!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Tinker is a three-year-old Shih Tzu who came from a breeder in Alabama. Of the group of dogs that came to APR from Alabama, she is the most outgoing. Tinker is a beautiful buff and white color and weighs in at 14 pounds. She is looking for a forever home that will take care of her and love her like she deserves. Tinker would do best in a home with older or no children, due to her limited socialization as a pup. She would love to go for daily walks and romp in the backyard, and of course, snuggle in your lap when it’s “down” time. Tinker is a gem of a dog just waiting for the right family to come find her!

Adopting a 6 year old shih tzu (28 lbs)?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I’m looking into the possibility to adopt a 28 pound shih tzu for free. He’s 6 yrs old and the owner can no longer look after him as the dog has become more aggresive since they had a child. Apparently he bites now (never use to before). The biting isn’t frequent…maybe twice or three times but its still unusual as it was never aggressive most of its life. I guess I have 2 questions:
1. Is 28 pounds way too over weight? He is slightly on the heavier side so I’m sure he could shed some pounds. But he is a big dog so he’s definitely more than the typical 9-16 pound standard range.
2. Is the aggressiveness/biting something to be concerned about? Or is he just acting out and can he be disciplined at his age?

The dog would end up at an adoption agency so I figured I can prevent that step for the dog and the agency and take him myself. The dog is overall healthy.

Yes you should be VERY concerned about the biting. Many rescues (ours included) cannot accept a biter due to liability issues. If possible have him evaluated by an experienced trainer and by your Vet for health issues before you agree to take him. Take their advise. You will almost certainly need to work with the trainer on the aggression issues.

A Shih Tzu should weight 16 pounds max. Even a big pet quality dog should generally top out at 20 pounds. Put him on a diet and walk him every day with 3 or 4 15 - 20 minute walks. Here is the diet we use in my breed rescue. It works, I promise. He will feel so much better!

First do NOT use diet dog food. It is lacking in necessary nutrients. Feed a premium quality dog kibble. Feed 1/4 cup per 30 pounds of dog. (desired weight) Add 1/4 cup of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and/or green beans. For snacks feed baby carrots and apple slices. Gradually increase your dogs activity level. Your dog will loose weight.
