Can anyone tell me a good brand of dry dog food for my overweight Shih Tzu?

I have a rescued 2(ish) year old spayed female shih tzu.

I rescued her in June and she was 14 lbs.
I took her to get weighed a little while ago and was shocked that she now weighs 19 LBS!
Since noticing her weight gain, I am changing things for her to be healthier. She is quite the couch potato but she does get two 15-20 minute walks per day and she does run around in the house and play with her toys. I am cutting back on her “training treats”, which I know I had been giving her way too many of, and we also cut back the portion size of her kibbles.

Other than the weight gain, she is an awesome, sweet and very healthy dog.

Since I am changing so much about how we are feeding her, I wanted to ask about a good pet food, especially for weight loss and especially for smaller dogs. Right now she is eating 1/4 cup of Iams small bites dog food. However, doing some research tonight, I read that iams isn’t very good food in general.

I was planning on getting her a weight control small bites Eukanuba dog food, but then I read bad reviews on that tonight as well.

I have been reading a lot about EVO dog food. Is that good for small dogs? Is it good for weightloss but also good for dogs that are couch potatoes as well?

If any one has ANY tips, I’d greatly appreciate them!

Thanks so much! =)
She had the thyroid panel done with I got her in June… and was fine.

So unfortunately, it's pretty much my fault she's a bit tubby. =)

Is all natural food better? I would love to be able to feed her fresh food, but it's just not a practical situation for me. She does get to eat frozen and cooked veggies and some fruit pretty often in additon to her dry food.

I'm looking for the most nutritional dry dog food I could purchase.

I had heard good things about the EVO and the Canidae foods, but I also read they weren't good for couch potatos so I'm reluctent to purchase them because I don't know how well it would work for her. Also, I heard EVO is like $50 a bag?

Evo has a reduced calorie food. Being grain free is is high in protien and low in carbs. Its the light blue bag and it works with weight loss very well. You just have to be sure not to over feed! I have a 65lb dog and he gets 1 cup and 1/4 a day!! Not very much! I would try 1/4(or just under) twice a day. Also the training treats don’t have to be very big. about the size of a pencil eraser cut in half. Good luck. All the Innova foods are good as well. They have a reduced fat (light green bag) if the grain free EVO is too rich for your dog.

I live in Canada, but a 5 lb bag of Evo is $18. 20lb bag is $36 and a 33lb bag is $60. The Innova is abit cheaper

How do you give your dog a haircut without him moving around?

I have a male shih-tzu that is 11 months old. Every time we go to give him a haircut he squirms around. We tried to flobe him, now every time we turn on the vacuum he pees! How do we calm him down when giving him a haircut?

Oh hon, I had to laugh when I read this, been there :) . First you need to regain trust. I take that you do not give him a hair cut very often…so here is what works for me.
I use siccors instead of a trimmer unitl I have gained trust. I take them on the kitchen Island, put them on a warm towl, have some easy listening music on, and speak very gently…even when he wiggles a bit. Do this every day for a week. Just cut some one day…some more the next. Do not change the pattern of voice and make sure you keep yourself in check not raising your voice or moving fast. I do my baby doll yorkie and a few others around the neighborhood.
After you’ve established trust they will eventually even lay down–get bored with the whole process. Then I graduate them to a small trimmer, it makes very little noise and I just pull the hair up to the intended lenth and push the trimmer against my fingers. (it doesn’t cut you) Always keep your finger between the dog and the trimmer/siccors. It helps to make sure you do not hurt your dog. Remember that patience builds trust. Good luck love.

Is it hard to train a Shih Tzu (shitzu)?

My family is adopting a small Shih Tzu puppy in a month or two. I was wondering if they’re hard to train.

Have any training tips? (I need it to come when we call it, and run around in a circle yipping whenever I singnal)
It is a pure-bred Shih Tzu. We are wating for it to be old enough to leave its mother.

They can be harder to potty train, but only because they have smaller bladders. They need more frequent potty breaks and it may take them longer to physically be able to hold it for long period of time.

As far as obedience training goes, they’re as good as any other dog. A dog will only learn what the owner teaches them: so as long as you make a training schedule (what to train first, when to bring in new things, etc) and stick to it then you should be fine. Start small with easy things like sit and stay. Work on the basics, then move on to tricks.

Basics:
Sit
Stay
Come
Down
Heel
Leave it
Drop it

Those commands can save a dog’s life. So work on those first before moving on to fancy tricks. I would recommend enrolling in a group puppy class: you’ll learn everything you need to know there!

2 week old Chihuahua x Shih-Tzu shaking in her sleep?

I recently rescued an orphaned two-week-old chihuahua x shih-tzu. She seems normal, she will crawl around when you are holding her but when she falls asleep she shakes. Her limbs and her head shake, almost like she is “dreaming” like an older dog. I don’t know if the litter nursed from the mother for the first two days to get the colostrum. I am planning to take her to the vet ASAP.

She also likes to sleep on her back.

The only time she is really vocal is when I have to stimulate her to urinate/defecate. Other than that, she is very quiet. She sleeps most of the day.

At what age should she start walking?

We are feeding her Just Born milk replacement, she has normal looking stools and urine. We feed her about every three hours or when she wakes up and starts suckling on things.

Any advice on raising an orphaned puppy or any knowledge of normal behavior of puppies her age would be very appreciated, I’ve never done this before :)
ok, first of all I would like to reassure you that the shaking in the sleep is very normal.. I have never seen a dog that has never done this before.. I have hand fed puppies before and have seen tons of litters of puppies and directly dealt with them and helped out.. they are very easy to care for. something about the shaking can possibly be a dream, normal rocking just like humans and especially babies do, or it could be the temperature. My 4 year old dog has always shaken in her sleep.. but she does it the most when shes cold so we put her bed next to a safe heater to keep her warm and she’ll wake up and lean her head right over it for hours on time.. they love the heat especially for puppies and short haired dogs…. puppies should start walking around or at least wobbling by 3 or 4 weeks… they won’t fully be able to walk until about a month and 2 weeks.. they have to learn how to use their legs and b/c they sleep most of their day away it takes them a while to learn how to walk.. some puppies are slower than others though.. if she does not start walking by 2 months then you should take her to a vet for a check up.. good luck.. if you need more help just message me.
