Choosing a name for your Shih Tzu puppy is one of the most pleasurable
tasks after you get your puppy home. Often the dog name you will
choose will represent a particular trait of the dog – be it color,
nature or temperament. Sometimes it will represent what you want
out of your dog – what role it plays in your life and/or how you
got it. There are many factors that influence a name and a lot
of joy is searching and finding just the right one.
A Rose by Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet
While logically speaking, the name would not have any real impact
on the puppy, there are many people who are convinced that the
puppy grows to fit the characteristics dictated by the name it
bears. Hence, if you call your male Shih Tzu puppy Messy, you
might end up having a real messy adult dog as well. Though it
is not in any way scientifically backed, it sometimes just happens
so. Maybe this is something to do with the Cosmic Law.
There are a few basic guidelines that you will need to keep in
mind when you name your puppy. The following tips might be of
help:
1. Use names that are easily pronounced so others can call
the dog correctly as well.
2. The Shih Tzu puppy responds well to simple one or two syllable
names; choose names that are phonetically clear,
3. Always choose a positive meaning; if you want to put a naughty
or negative name, it might not be always appropriate to call
it by that name, and it may cause you embarrassment at some
time or other.
4. Use names that sound sweet – not like commands so the Shih
Tzu puppy respond well to it; remember this dog hates any type
of harshness.
5. Try to incorporate some of the basic traits of the Shih
Tzu puppy into its name so the bonding will be easier.
6. You can also look at it – check the way it walks, what it
likes most, how it reacts to you and others – and use what you
see as inspiration for the name choice.
7. Always have your family members involved in this exercise
because once you have a name that is well accepted, your pet
is well accepted as well.

Once you have named your Shih Tzu puppy, it becomes a member
of your family. Now all you will have to worry about is the learning
and practicing the principles of general Shih
Tzu care.
